St Alban’s Launches Weekly Meals for the Homeless
“Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” — Matthew 25:40
With the full support of Reverend Tuomas and the Church Council, St Alban’s has launched a new outreach initiative to provide hot meals for the homeless in Copenhagen.
On Wednesday 15 October, following approval from the Ministry for Food and Agriculture (Fødevarestyrelsen), our kitchen team prepared and delivered the first batch of meals as part of this important new project. After a successful inspection, St Alban’s was granted permission to begin operations, with only a few minor conditions left to be resolved in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we are delighted to continue cooking and distributing meals.
Each Wednesday, the team aims to prepare 30 nourishing hot meals, which are delivered to Hjælp din Næste, a registered grassroots charity, for distribution at 5 pm. The food from our first run was received with gratitude — and disappeared quickly!
Our first team — George, Alex, Charlotte and Owen — oversaw the initial delivery, which went smoothly. The plan is to continue weekly throughout the winter months, aiming to cover around 40 Wednesdays each year. Encouragingly, Hjælp din Næste has offered to fund most of the food costs, ensuring the project can continue and grow sustainably.
Volunteers Needed
To keep this good work going, we’re looking for volunteers to join the kitchen team. Tasks include maintaining the kitchen to Fødevarestyrelsen’s high hygiene standards, buying and preparing food, packing meals, and transporting them to Hjælp din Næste at Brolæggerstræde 1.
If you’d like to help, please speak to Owen after the Sunday service or email him at owenprewett@gmail.com. All hands are very welcome!
