Silence, Service, Peace - A Message from the Chaplain

Posted on Tuesday 6th September, 2016

My Dear Friends,

Mother Teresa of Calcutta was declared a Saint by Pope Francis in a ceremony at the Vatican on Sunday 4 September. The event shone a spotlight on the life and work of this remarkable woman who founded the Missionaries of Charity and spent her life in the service of orphans, lepers and the terminally ill.

A prayer written by this new saint has become a favourite of mine. In just a few short sentences Mother Teresa places the call to service within the wider context of the Christian spiritual life — it begins in silence and ends in peace:

The fruit of silence is prayer,
the fruit of prayer is faith,
the fruit of faith is love,
the fruit of love is service,
the fruit of service is peace.

That, I think, is the sacred cycle we are called to enter — silence, prayer, faith, love, service, peace.

The problems arise — as many of us know only too well — when we step-out of that cycle; when we don’t begin in silence and in prayer, but instead go headlong into doing, doing, doing!

In fact, it’s rather like something which Desmond Tutu once said. The former Archbishop of Cape Town reportedly claimed, “I'm too busy to pray for less than two hours a day”! What he meant, of course, was that the busier it gets the more essential it is to make room for that silence and prayer which are the indispensable starting points for a life lived to the full.

So, here at Saint Alban’s I hope that we will continue to reach out and serve others as best we can. I hope that we will do all the good we can in every way that we can. But, I also hope that we will begin by allowing ourselves to be served —- allowing ourselves the time and space to sink down into that depth, mystery, meaning and Love which holds us in being and which will never let us go.

The fruit of silence is prayer,
the fruit of prayer is faith,
the fruit of faith is love,
the fruit of love is service,
the fruit of service is peace. Amen.

Darren.
