Mission Action Plan Launched at Saint Alban’s

Posted on Tuesday 2nd February, 2016

The Venerable Colin Williams, Archdeacon of Germany and Northern Europe and the Eastern Archdeaconry of the Diocese in Europe, launched the “Saint Alban’s Mission Action Plan 2015-2018” after the morning service on Sunday 31 January, the Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple.

The plan, which is entitled “God Gives the Growth”, outlines a series of objectives and accompanying new initiatives for the Anglican Church in Denmark in the coming years. Grouped under a number of priorities, the strategy commits Saint Alban’s to building up the body of Christ, fostering growth, and sharing in God’s mission in the world. It also sets out proposed actions in relation to promoting reconciliation, striving for the creation of a just society and a sustainable environment, and resourcing the work and witness of a growing congregation.

Preaching at the Eucharist on the Feast of the Presentation, Archdeacon Colin spoke of the connection between endings and beginnings. Candlemas, he said, is both the end of the season of Christmas, but also the beginning of Christ’s revelation to the whole world as King and Lord. So too, the launching of a Mission Action Plan is, on the one hand, the end of a process of preparation and planning but, on the other, the beginning of a renewed commitment to proclamation and service.

“There is much to be done,” said the Archdeacon, “a Gospel to be proclaimed, the poor to come alongside, a world to win. No wonder we move from the crib outwards to the world in which Jesus is already waiting for us to join with him in all that he is doing in our world. No wonder we do not call a halt on our striving to be a people who proclaim, a people who engage. In and through your Mission Action Plan all that will happen, and may God bless you richly in that. For it is an ending of a preparation but it is the beginning of hard work, commitment, dedication, joy and blessing in this congregation.”

In a theological introduction to the Mission Action Plan, the Chaplain of Saint Alban’s, the Revd Darren McCallig, explained the significance of the document’s title, “God gives the growth”. “We should,” he wrote “be mindful of Saint Paul’s admonition to the squabbling Christians of Corinth when they boasted about their missionary “success.” Paul reminded them that while they had indeed undertaken specific and necessary preparatory tasks — “I planted and Apollos watered” — it was ultimately God alone who had brought new life and increase. “So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.”

“For us at Saint Alban’s, this Mission Action Plan is our carefully and prayerfully considered attempt at planting and nurturing in this place at this time. We commend it to all those who wish to see the continued flourishing of the Anglican Church in Denmark; but most of all we commend it to the One who alone gives the growth.”
