Lord, for the Years - A Message from the Chaplain

Posted on Monday 4th January, 2016

My dear friends,

The ending of one year and the beginning of another is an annual opportunity to take stock and resolve to ring some changes in our habits and routines. It is also a moment in which to look back over the previous twelve months and seek to discern, and give thanks for, God’s loving presence and purpose in our lives. As the first verse of Timothy Dudley-Smith’s song of praise “Lord, for the years” — which we sang at the first Sunday Eucharist of 2016 — puts it:

      Lord, for the years your love has kept and guided,
      urged and inspired us, cheered us on our way,
      sought us and saved us, pardoned and provided,
      Lord of the years, we bring our thanks today.

That hope-filled hymn goes on to invoke God’s care and protection on our communities, our nations and our world, before turning in the final verse to focus on us as individuals. It is as if Dudley-Smith is reminding us that the transformation we seek in the world around us must begin closer to home — must begin in each human heart.

      Lord, for ourselves, in living power remake us,
      self on the cross and Christ upon the throne;
      past put behind us, for the future take us,
      Lord of our lives, to live for Christ alone.

In 2016 may God give us the grace to put the past behind us and step into the future with confidence, trust and hope. Amen.
