In the March / April Newsletter the Chaplain described this time of the year as our annual “remembrance of the costly way of love, the costly way of the cross.”

“In these weeks we are reminded that Jesus did not die from illness or old age. He did not die in his bed surrounded by loved ones. On the contrary, he was killed because his vision of the Kingdom of God – a world of justice and peace for all – caused leaders in church and state to respond with violence. He suffered because he refused to compromise with evil and oppression. He died on the cross because, in the end, there was no other way to prove to us how far love and truth are prepared to go.”

“And we – we who are signed with that same cross at our Baptism and on Ash Wednesday – are called to walk the costly way of love with him. We are, as the Lenten blessing puts it, to take up our cross and follow him. Follow him to those places in our world, and in ourselves, where compassion and mercy are most in need. Follow him to those regions – within and without us – where justice and peace are in short supply.”

“If, by the grace of God, we do that – if we walk the costly way of love with Christ and  become united with him in his death – we will, as Saint Paul reminds us in Romans, also be united with Christ in his resurrection and walk with him in newness of life.”
