August Feels Like September - A Message from the Chaplain

Posted on Saturday 13th August, 2016

My dear friends,

August in Denmark feels like September in Ireland — and I don’t mean the weather! Whereas in Ireland September signals a sort of “New Year” with schools, colleges and church activities recommencing after the summer break, here in Denmark it is the month of August which has that “back to business” feeling about it.

That’s certainly the case here at St Alban’s. In the next few weeks the church diary is full of both new initiatives and familiar favourites. I’d like to bring some of them to your attention:

Sunday School recommences this Sunday (14 August) with the wonderful teachers and volunteers exploring the way of Jesus with our little ones.

The August ‘Second Sunday Service’ is this Sunday (14 August) at 16.00. It will be a Service of Holy Communion with prayers from the Celtic tradition led by me with Ursula Sonnewald preaching.

The Summer Fête takes places on Saturday 27 August. This year’s event promises to be extra special as it’s the 25th anniversary of the Fête being held in Churchillparken. Please tell all your friends.

A new discipleship course will begin on Sunday 28 August. Running for six consecutive Sundays (from 12.15 to 13.15) until Sunday 2 October, the ‘Pilgrim Course’ from the Church of England will examine what it means to travel through life with Jesus Christ.

A ‘Blessing of the Pets’ service will be held at Church on Sunday 11 September at 16.00. Our pets are a blessing to us — let’s thank God for them!

This year’s Harvest Thanksgiving Service will be held on Sunday 18 September at 10.30, followed by a Ploughman’s Lunch. Non-perishable goods can be brought to church to be donated to charitable groups in Copenhagen.

Voting is well under-way for the Sponsored Songs of Praise service to be held on Sunday 9 October at 16.00 when the seven most popular hymns — as voted for by the congregation — will be sung. Votes cost 10 kr each and you can vote as often as you like until 25 September.

All of that is in addition to the many other activities at St Alban’s, including: the Friday evening Bible Discussion Group, the Youth Group, the Guardians, the Student Group, the 9.00am Morning Prayer for the summer months, the services in Aarhus, Jelling, Vejle — and much, much more! Please keep these activities — and all who enable them to happen — in your prayers.

Heavenly Father,
in whom we live and move and have our being:
We humbly pray that your Holy Spirit may so guide and govern us
that in all the cares and occupations of our daily life,
we may never forget your presence
but may remember that we are always walking in your sight,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
