10 Ways to Reduce your Carbon Footprint - and Save Money!

Every journey begins with a single step!

To start with measure your current footprint and see how much energy you consume each year.

If you have children or grandchildren, encourage them to monitor your progress – they can be pretty hard task masters!

How to measure your footprint? Look on Environmental Links or pick up a form from Church.

  1. Switch off lights and electrical appliances when they are not being used

Say goodbye and goodnight to those ‘stand by’ lights. Turn off chargers when not in use. Whatever the gadget, if it’s hot, it’s using energy.

  1. Replace used light bulbs with low energy bulbs and replace old appliances with energy efficient ones
  2. See our Board in church for advice on quality, disposal and other concerns.
  3. Only use what you need

Only boil as much water as you need. Do not over charge mobiles, batteries, toothbrushes and the like.

  1. Turn your thermostat down by 1 degree and monitor the difference
  2. Find that favourite old jersey.
  3. Recycle waste

Check that you are recycling all that you can. Does your commune collect, where are the nearest drop off points? Find out where the waste from your home actually goes. How much junk mail do you get every week?

  1. Buy locally and buy seasonally

See our notice Board and the March 08 magazine for suggestions. Go Meatless once a week.

  1. Look at how you travel

Do you go by car? Could you give someone a lift, could you car pool? Could you go by bicycle, by foot or by public transport? For holiday travel look at alternatives to flying, Look at the growing number of eco-holidays on offer.

  1. Ensure that lofts, walls and hot water tanks are sufficiently insulated. Draught proof windows and doors
  2. Check out if there are grants available from your local authority.
  3. Compare your current heating source with others

If you use oil, is gas available in your area, is district heating coming your way? Would solar panels be an option? Check out if there are grants available from your local authority.

  1. Share with others the information that you find and join the St. Alban’s Eco Bulletin Board in Church
