We have a new Chaplain!
Posted on Sunday 7th December, 2008
The churchwardens are delighted to announce that subject to completion of formalities, the Reverend Jonathan LLoyd, currently Priest-in-Charge of the United Benefice of Charlcombe with Bath St Stephen (Diocese of Bath & Wells) and an elected member of The General Synod of the Church of England, is to be appointed as Chaplain of St Alban’s with effect from 1 August 2009.
Prior to his current position which he has been in for five years, Jonathan was Senior Chaplain at the University of Bath and has been Chair of the Conference of European University Chaplains. Leading up to that, he had been Director of Social Responsibility in the Diocese of Southwark that covers south London, a Priest Vicar of Southwark Cathedral and a curate in Sydenham where he was ordained in 1990.
Before taking Holy Orders Jonathan had a career in Social Work, and was Principal Social Worker at St Christopher’s Hospice.
Jonathan, who is married, is 52. His wife Sue is an occupational therapist and specialist dyslexia teacher and they have two daughters – one aged 20 who is at York University, and the other, 17, who is studying for A levels.
Fr Jonathan was in Copenhagen ten days ago, when he met members of the Council, as well as Ulla, Robert and Peter, and had a chance to see the church and house where he stayed, hosted by Alan and Barbara Woods.
He has sent us this message: “Sue and I are delighted to be coming to St Alban’s in August. St Alban’s is clearly a vibrant and committed Christian community, and it will be a real honour to serve as your Chaplain. We are excited to be coming, and we look forward to meeting you all. You are in my prayers as you prepare this Advent with watchful expectancy for the birth of Christ. Please pray for me and my family as this morning it is announced that we will be leaving St Stephen’s Bath and St Mary the Virgin Charlcombe. And when the time comes, have a joyful and peaceful Christmas. Yours in Christ, Jonathan.”
We would also ask that you keep the joint congregations of St Stephen’s and St Mary’s in your prayers as they receive the news of Jonathan’s departure and start the search for a new priest-in-charge.

A letter from our Suffragan Bishop:
The Right Reverend David Hamid

TO THE PEOPLE OF ST ALBAN’S, COPENHAGEN
Dear Sisters and Brothers
Today you will have heard the announcement of the appointment of the Revd Jonathan LLoyd to be your new chaplain, beginning 1 August 2009.
It is with great pleasure that I can inform you that Bishop Geoffrey Rowell intends to appoint Fr LLoyd to be the next Archdeacon of Germany and Northern Europe. However, this archidiaconal appointment will be set for early 2010, thus allowing a decent period of settling in to life in St Alban’s Copenhagen, as a matter of priority. A date for Fr Jonathan’s collation as Archdeacon has yet to be finalised, but will likely be in January of that year. As soon as a date has been set, there will be a further announcement.
In the meantime, until Fr Jonathan’s collation as Archdeacon, I continue the duties of archdeacon as well as lead bishop for Germany and Northern Europe, and will continue to count on the support of the Area Dean, the Revd Nicholas Howe for the Nordic and Baltic States. Any queries on archidiaconal matters should continue to be directed either to the Area Dean or to myself as appropriate.
This is an excellent appointment for St Alban’s Copenhagen. In due course when Fr Jonathan takes up the additional role of Archdeacon, we will be welcoming a most experienced and gifted priest for this senior role in the Diocese.
With my prayers for an Advent full of hope and joy.
Yours sincerely
+ David
