Sunday School
Sunday school takes place at the same time as the Sung Eucharist from 10.30 am. We begin upstairs and later attend the end of the service joining our families for communion and blessing. St Alban´s upholds, and works according to, the Child Protection Policy of the Church of England: (http://www.cofe.anglican.org/info/papers/protectingchildren.pdf)
Teaching materials “Godly Play”
Godly play is a way of telling Bible stories and traditions of the faith by providing objects and materials to work with in a safe and stimulating environment. It combines and integrates the two primary gateways to knowledge for children – language and play
The children are invited to enter into the materials so that they can use them to create their own meaning. The materials used to help tell the story of the day are placed in the centre of the circle, symbolising that God can be present and accessible to everyone –both listeners and storytellers. The different genre of Godly Play:
- Sacred Stories are told to stimulate a sense of Christian Unity – at the same time they provide the raw materials for the development of a sense of Christian identity.
- Parables stimulate our sense of creativity.
- They question our view of everyday life and wake us to see new possibilities.
- Liturgical Actions stimulate the integration of identity and creativity.
- Children can learn the language of the liturgy and can practice it so they can enter more fully into the liturgical experience of being in church.
Sunday school participates on special occasions; singing songs in church on special days, presenting something we have learned to the congregation and participating in the Children’s Christmas Carol Service on Christmas Eve.
All children are welcome to join us if they can sit still and listen carefully to a story without mum or dad being there.
There is no Sunday School during the Summer Holidays.
